About the project
This is a web-based, free ‘dictionary’ of terms that can be used by researchers, clinicians, patients and others. Our goal is to help people make better shared decisions with their healthcare clinician about the prescribing and use of antidepressant medications.
The same dictionary will also be used by researchers and pharmaceutical companies, so they can collect, share, and present data about the adverse effects of antidepressants in a clear and meaningful way.

How do I read results?
We have brought together a list of easily searchable common side effects. The list and the descriptions have been co-designed with a group of people who have lived experience of depression and antidepressants, so we hope that they will be helpful and relevant. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and if you have any concerns you should also consult your health professional.

The Dictionary of Adverse Events is the outcome of a collaborative effort between clinicians and researchers at the University of Oxford and people with lived experience (or ‘patients’) of antidepressant treatment for depression.
The Dictionary’s patient-friendly terminology of adverse events can be accessed for free by anyone, anywhere with a mobile device or computer and an Internet connection. The Dictionary contains an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of terms that may help patients describe their experience of an adverse event(s) during their treatment journey, and to bring it up for discussion with their doctor.
